Promoting linguistic diversity is part of the DNA of the EU and language learning is at the heart of our efforts to build a European area of education by 2025. That is why, last May, I presented a Council recommendation to boost language learning and teaching. This year the EU has a special opportunity to celebrate languages: the legal basis for multilingualism, which defines the official languages of the EU and represents the raison d’être of translation and interpretation in the EU, Council Regulation 1/58, celebrates its 60th anniversary.”

On this occasion, Commissioner Günther H.
